Triple Pipe Heat Exchanger
Triple Pipe Heat Exchanger
This project, part of the Thermo Fluid System Design course, focused on designing a triple pipe heat exchanger (TPHX) to cool oil from 65°C to 55°C using water at 25°C. The TPHX configuration, with an added intermediate pipe, enhanced heat transfer efficiency compared to a double pipe exchanger by providing extra flow passages. Oil flowed through the intermediate space, while water circulated through the core and outer annular spaces.
Fabricated with copper pipes and welded joints for optimal heat conductivity, the structure passed pressure and leakage tests, handling up to 5 kgf/cm² (490,332.5 Pa). Design and simulation were supported by SolidWorks, MATLAB, 3E+, HTRI, and Ansys. The TPHX achieved a 10°C temperature drop in the intermediate pipe over 3.5 ft, surpassing the 4°C drop of a double pipe system. The project demonstrated the exchanger's potential for applications such as cooling lubricating oil, food processing, and pasteurization.
